Day 8 - Tour of Trenton and Philadelphia and a surprise dinner

Odometer Reading:   58248
Starting Point:  Norwalk, CT
Destination:  Philadelphia, PA
Miles driven today:  152
State Lines Crossed:  4 - CT to NY to NJ to PA
Quilt shop stops:  0

We started the day today with no rain, but lots of traffic heading toward NYC, but it thinned out after a bit and the drive wasn't too bad, of course, I wasn't the one who was driving and negotiating the highways, just riding shotgun.

Today was a day of tours.  We drove to Trenton, NJ to do a Stephanie Plum tour.  If you haven't read the books, you can just skip the next couple of pictures.

The tour guide was really an interesting guy.  It sounds like he has done a lot of different jobs and he was certainly knowledgable about Trenton.  He also does tours about civil war sites and the manufacturing history of Trenton.

The first thing we learned is that the Stephanie Plum books are set in Trenton, but reality differs from fiction in that some names have been changed and others don't correspond to particular businesses..  He said there is an on going debate in town about which businesses the book is based on, but that Janet Evanovich never divulges and often hedges when asked.  Here are a few pics of what our tour guide said "could" be related to the books

Bail bonds office

Tasty cake bakery...we went in..pastries were purchased and eaten and were delicious.

It's in "the burg"

Cluck In the bucket (he said he ate there once, and never again)

Stephanie's parents' house

Stephanie's apartment

It was all just fun, and we got stories about Trenton politics and history to boot.  I think the thing we went away with is that Trenton used to be a really charming town, but with no jobs, it is economically depressed and really run down....which is sad to see.

From there it was off to Philadelphia   I missed the welcome to PA sign...darn it.

Downtown Philly

We started with a walk to Reading Market where we had a real Philly cheesesteak.  Then we walked around the market and wished we were hungry enough to get some of the fresh donuts and other pastries, but we really didn't need them and walked away.  From there we did a hop on hop off bus ride around the city.  The tour guide was again, very knowledgable and passionate about the city and those who worked to build it.  Just a couple of pics

So much to see, never enough time!!

The surprise was that a friend saw a Facebook post with a picture of the fountain in Love Plaza and quickly texted me to say that she and her husband are in Philly visiting their daughter and we were able to get together for dinner.  It was so nice to see them.  They live in Wisconsin so we don't see each other often, but it's always like we just saw each other yesterday and we pick up as though no time has passed.  Friends like that are a treasure.

Tomorrow we head to Morgantown to spend a couple of days with Katie and Josh.  Can't wait to see them!  Can't wait to have a couple of days to chill.  The trip has been great, but a new city, new hotel every night is kind of exhausting.  I wouldn't trade a minute of this though - it's been wonderful to spend time with my sis and see the NE.
