Sunday-the Burrens

We left Galway and headed for the Cliffs of Mohrer, driving through an area called The Burrens. This is an area with lots of limestone rocks and not as good agricultural area as the rest of Ireland. Our guide said that this area was especially hard hit by the famine and that wealthy landowners had men build rock walls for a penny a day so they could provide for their families. The walls are called lace walls because they were built with spaces so that the wind wouldn't take them down. We are certainly learning about the difficult history of the Irish people.

From a vantage point - check out that blue sky and all the green fields.....
