Cologne walking tour - December 4th

This morning we docked at Zons where those taking the tour of Cologne were picked up by buses and taken to the city center (about a 30 minute drive). It took the ship an additional 3 hours to get to Cologne.

We had a very funny tour guide, a middle school teacher when he is not taking tour groups around.  We were dropped off right at the Cathedral, so after a bit of a walk through the Christmas market and s view of Roman mosaic floor that was found locally.  The guide talked about the early Roman inhabitants and how as each new group moved in they built on top of the what was there previously.

The cathedral was spectacular to see in person, but it was difficult to get a decent photo.

According to legend, the gold item below holds the bones of the Magi.  The Italians had this, but it was stolen by the Germans who have kept it to this day.

Of course, I saw quilt patterns in the mosaics.

After we left the cathedral, we walked around town a bit, then visited both the old and new city hall.  A number of famous people had given speeches from this balcony, including John F Kennedy.

And of course there was a Christmas market or two to stop at.  The first one was the Gnomes Market

There was more to this day....look for another post.
