Heidelberg - December 6th

Our ship docked at Mannheim where we boarded our bus to Heidelberg at 10:00. The ship took off for Speyer at 10:30.

Heidelberg is Germany's oldest university town and is the site of the ruins of a picture book castle of one of the palatine princes.  The castle was abandoned 300 years ago but is still home to one of the world's largest wine barrel, a 250 year old vat shaped from 130 oak trees that once held 50,000 gallons of wine.

After the tour we headed to town where we had a lunch of Viener schnitzel.  I was able to track down a charger for my old iPad which had gone missing before I got on the ship.  I  also found a yarn shop, and picked up a few skeins of yarn.  We also wandered around a couple of markets before catching the bus for our trip to Speyer.  Also saw the monkey that represents the real monkey that supposedly collected tolls at the bridge in days gone by.  Supposedly if you rub the plate it brings you wealth.

When we came back we did the galley tour and got an idea of how they manage the kitchen when 200 people all sit down to dinner at once.  Chef said they had less than 15% waste thanks to their ordering system
