October 3, 2018 - Trondheim

Day 6 - October 3, 2018 - Trondheim

Trondheim is an ancient city founded by the Viking King Olan Tryggvason in 997 AD by the Viking King Olav Tryggvasson, who gave the town the name Nidaros. Trondheim is a large city by Norwegian standards, though it has still managed to preserve much of the charm and intimacy of a small town. It is also a city full of contrasts with monastery ruins and impressive wooden buildings, colorful wharves and a beautiful city bridge dating back to 1861. Trondheim is also considered to be a spiritual capital and a major European city, situated in the middle of Norway.  Throughout the middle ages, the Nidaros Cathedral was the main seat of the Archbishop.  Some of Norway’s largest farms were found here, and according to written records, it was here that aquavit first made an appearance in Norway.

We toured the city by coach first stopping at the Nidaros Cathedral. It is built over the burial place of St. Olav, the patron saint of Norway. Construction began in 1070 and is considered the most beautiful religious building in Norway. We also stopped at Utsiken, literally meaning the view, to admire the city from above.
